fretless in a metal band is entirely workable. you would more than likely want to get a coated 'board. or a synthetic material.

I'd recommend very hot pickups as you're going to want to cut through the mix and you're no longer going to have the bite that frets (metal strings vibrating against metal) give you.

I'd also consider hot pickups. maybe in a MM style and possibly adding piezos to the equation.

Jerzy is an amazing builder. I envy you if you're getting one of his basses...!

Yea you read my mind, was considering the piezo MM thing but I'm not very clued in on it's ins and outs.
Its one of those things were everyones been saying "well its really up to you to decide" but I'm so neurotic I cant decide. buck2
Fretless or fretted Jerzy will build a beautiful bass for me.

And dont be too envious Stew my father had to die so I could sell his house to get it! Cry
Maybe I'll get his initials on it somewhere.

This is the band I have to sound match with it anyway.

Would the open even be audible, or substitute bypass surgery?

Fretless 9 you say?

Maybe that'll get your GAS going  Evil

For a fretless 9 I highly recommend an epoxied fretboard seeing as how the lower strings are only made as roundwounds. The .165, .195 strings will eat your board in no time if its only oiled.

Dude not cool, thats like waving a big mac and a bottle of jack in front of a homeless person!

Thanks guys for all this info on fretless terms etc
I've been talking with a friend of mine and he's reccommending I stick with a lined for now, due to the initonative issues that would kill my tapping.
I also wonder how this new fretless would handle in a "metal band". I still need a humbucker sound for slapping and percussive playing. I wonder if this would still be a workable atribute for a fretless.
I'm quite worried about it, and I've started thinking to get a lined 9, but the idea of a fretless seems so magical, but I primarily want to use it on the bands next album exclusively.
What would I lose and why does it even matter. I got alot of people giving me information that doesn't make much sense to me.
Lead guitarist who I trust completely was saying it would need some kind of distortion in certain parts, I'm not sure what he meant.
Help me elders!!! I beseach you!

I been in contact with Jerzy Drozd about a Basic or Excellency IX, oh so lush...
